Wines Under 20 Euros

In north-western Spain, the Bierzo wine region produces some of the most characterful and expressive Mencía-based reds in the country.

The winery Descendientes de J. Palacios has played a key role in raising its international profile with wines that balance local tradition and modern winemaking. Their approachable yet terroir-reflective wine Pétalos del Bierzo captures much of what makes the region special.

Where Bierzo “Lives” (Region & Influence)

Bierzo is located in the province of León in the autonomous community of Castile and León in Spain and officially part of that region, not Galicia.

However, vitulturally and climatically, Bierzo sits right on the border with Galicia. The influence of Atlantic climate (cool, humid conditions) is strong here, creating fresher, more aromatic red wines than found deeper inland.

That Atlantic influence also shapes Galician wine regions like Ribeira Sacra, Valdeorras, and Monterrei, where the Mencía grape is also widely planted and expresses a related regional style of red wine.

So while Bierzo wine is administratively Castile and León, it shares climatic and stylistic affinities with nearby Galician regions.

About the Wine — Pétalos del Bierzo

Pétalos is often considered the entry-level or regional wine from the winery but it remains one of the most recognisable and widely appreciated expressions of Mencía.

It combines grapes from many small parcels of old vines across the region and offers fresh red fruit, floral aromas, a medium body, balanced acidity, and soft tannins, with gentle oak influence from about 10 months in French barrels.

The wine reflects the freshness of Atlantic-influenced climate, the mineral complexity of Bierzo’s soils, and lively structure, making it versatile alongside food.
